After a lukewarm reception to her left of center release, “In Common,” Alicia Keys is back with the official lead single, “Blended Family,” off of her new album, Here. What can I say? It’s a beautiful song with an important message, yet it doesn’t connect the way her past hits have. I’m sure radio will eat it up as they love a Keys ballad, yet “Blended Family” plays less powerful than mega-hits “No One” and “Girl On Fire.” The addition of A$AP Rocky is a cute touch but does little to elevate the song. Here’s to hoping there’s more of that experimental sound that “In Common” brought to the table. Even if it sounded out of place with her singing it at the Democratic National Convention.
